Your Personal Paparazzi
Our Experience with a Day in the Life Photography Session
Disclaimer: This is not a paid post. Monica from UsLoveWe Photography reached out to me to ask if my family would be models to help build her ‘day in the life photography’ portfolio. She gave us a free day in the life session and asked for nothing in return. I am writing this post as a thank you and to honor her wonderful photos.
Our Day in the Life Photography Session
It can be bit daunting to invite someone into your life to act as your personal paparazzi. I mean, who would want to see pictures of my daily life as a mom anyhow? But sometimes it’s good to look back and not just see the staged photos, but the ones of real life too.
I wasn’t certain how I would feel during my day in the life photography session, I’m not camera shy (as you can probably tell by my instagram account), but I’m used to being the one to take my own photos; how was I going to feel to have someone else taking them for me?
Also, oh, my, gosh. What if my kids decided not to cooperate and it just ends up being a total melt down disaster day? Well, let me just say that number 1, because you’re in your own home, your kids are much more likely to cooperate because they’re in familiar territory. And number 2 because you’re just going about your daily business and not asking them to stop, smile, and pose every 5 seconds you might be surprised how normal everything seems.
Planning for the Shoot
Monica told me to prepare my children ahead of time by telling them a friend would be coming over. I told Zeke we’d be taking a few pictures, but that was all. Really the only thing that was completely out of place that day was that my house was clean; other than that it could have been just any old day.
I decided not to plan an outing, though I’d considered going to park, and decided instead to invite Monica into our daily routine. We did a bath in the morning, read stories, ate lunch, and played outside for a bit. It was a fun and simple day, but it was very true to who we are as a family. My days with my kids are often spent in the beautiful mundane routine of motherhood; so I was hoping this session would capture that.
Our Life Captured Forever
When our photos came back I was overcome with emotions and couldn’t stop smiling.
They captured my daily moments with my kids; moments that normally no one would ever see. Moments that may someday otherwise be forgotten. I know it’ll be wonderful to look back on these pictures and for the briefest of moments be transported back to motherhood in the early days. To remember what it was like to snuggle my daughter close after bath time. How I used to rumple my son’s wet hair. How it felt to have my children crowding my lap for story time.
There are the moments I know we all want to savor as mothers, but sometimes with the passing of time we may forget.
I love the sweet, simple moments that Monica was able to capture and how a day in the life photography session told the story of me and my kids; for real. For a moment I feel like I saw myself through their eyes; I could see their friend, and playmate, and comforter. I loved the chance to be able to get a bird’s eye view of what our life looks like from the outside.
If you’re a stay at home mom, I highly recommend a session like this; there is nothing more beautiful than seeing motherhood through this lease. But also for families this can be such a special way to build and captures memories together. Can you imagine how fun a pillow fight session could be!?
